Definition

Glossary of "Environmental Science: Earth as a Living Planet (2nd ed.)" by Botkin & Keller (1998)

  • An amount of a resource that can be harvested at regular intervals indefinitely. There are two concepts here. The first is the maximum abundance of a population or species that can be harvested without degrading the ability of that population or species to withstand the same level of harvest in the future. The second concept extends sustainability to the ecosystem. It is maximum abundance of a population or species that can be harvested without degrading (1) the ability of that population or species and (2) its ecosystem to withstand the same level of harvest in the future.
