- The optimization procedure used for a certain type of ordered, directed character. Characters may be polarized or not. The costs of the transformations, 0 -> 1, 1 -> 2, etc., are as in Wagner optimization, but weighted by a high arbitrary value to ensure that each occurs only once on the cladogram. the costs of all transformations in the opposite direction are as in Wagner optimization. Dollo optimization requires all homoplasy to be accounted for by reversals to more plesiomorphic conditions.
