Phylogenetic analyses were carried out to investigate the relationships among families of the order Hypnales, based on the chloroplast ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit (''rbc''L) gene data.  We sequenced the chloroplast ''rbc''L gene from 11-hypnalean mosses.  These sequences proved to be no significantly different in GC content from those reported for ''Marchantia polymorpha'' and ''Physcomitrella patens''.  Full length of the sequences was the same as in other bryophytes previously reported, and 3 or 6 bp shorter than that of tracheophytes.  Phylogenetic trees were constructed by the neighbor-joining (NJ), minimumevolution (ME), maximum-parsimony (MP) and maximum-likelihood (ML) methods for 34 ''rbc''L sequences.  The topologies with NJ, ME, MP and ML methods were nearly consistent with each other.  The results suggest that the Hypnales are not monophyletic.  The genus ''Brotherella'' is distinguished as a resolved monophyletic group, in which ''Hypnum tristo-viride'' and ''Heterophyllium nematosum'' are also placed.  The present study also suggests that the genus ''Entodon'' be placed in a clade near the ''Brotherella''.  The result does not concur with Vitt (1984) nor Buck and Vitt (1986), who suggested that the Hypnales would have been separated into single costa groups and a double costa group at an early evolutional stage.  The result showed a necessity of reconsideration on the familial circumscription of the order Hypnales.
