Abstract

Kato, M., Ohno, K. & Mochida, Y. 2013. Analysis and evaluation on the distribution and sustainable existence of a dwarf bamboo Pleioblastus chino var. vaginatus. Hikobia 16: 351-xxx. [In Japanese]

We have conducted a study on the population and association of a dwarf bamboo (Pleioblastus chino var. vaginatus) community and adjoining various vegetation types that are distributed on the suburb plateaus of Atami City in Shizuoka Prefectur. Various vegetation unites such as the substitute communities (P. chino var. vaginatus comm., Arundinella hirtaMiscanthus sinensis comm. and Weigela decoraClethra barbinervis comm.), and also the semi-natural forest communities (Sasa borealisFagus crenata comm. and Neolitsea aciculataQuercus acuta comm.) were classified by means of phytosociological analysis. Among these classified vegetation units, the A. hirtaM. sinensis (AM) comm. and the initial phase of the P. chino var. vaginatus (Pcv) comm., and also the continuing phase of the Pcv comm. and the typical group of the W. decoraC. barbinervis (W–C) comm. occur in neighbor communities respectively and are in advance and afterward successions. We also produced the vegetation dynamics maps by means of the overlaying of two vegetation maps at the locations selected from study sites that were made using the legends of classified communities and several aerial photos which were taken in 1976 and 2005, and examined the enlarging and reducing distribution areas of several communities. Some areal increases of dwarf bamboo communities were caused by the transition from the AM comm., and their areal decreasing resulted from the changes into the WC comm. and the Cryptomeria japonicaChamaecyparis obtusa afforestation. In each survey site, we determined the length, diameter, density, dry weight, standing crop, partial weight and length ratios of every aboveground culm of P. chino var. vaginatus, and also cover-values of dwarf bamboo patches and evergreen plants in forest communities, and canopy-openness as the light environment of forest floor. Some production structures and growth patterns of the dwarf bamboo in each plant community were categorized through the statistical analysis (tests of Tukey’s HSD and independence) to the collected measurements, and its growth characteristics were determined. The result may indicate that the plastic adaptabilities in their growth patterns are made the sustainable existence of their population and patches possible under the various light environments in each vegetation unit occurring in the close spatial sequence and the same temporal sere.
