- A type of fruit in which the fleshy portion is derived from tissues other than those of the ovary. In apples and pears the core is the ovary, and floral parts and the receptacle form the fleshy outer portions. In the strawberry the receptacle forms the large red "fruit" and the "seeds" are actually fruits called achenes.
