Definition
Glossary of "Plant Biology (1st ed.)" by Graham et al. (2003)
- A life cycle in which a haploid (N) gametophyte produces gametes by mitosis that fuse into a diploid (2N) zygote that germinates and grows into a sporophyte. The sporophyte produces spores by meiosis that form new gametophytes.

- plant reproductive cycle in which a haploid plant produces gametes; upon fertilization, the gametes develop into diploid plants; these produce spores that develop into haploid plants.
