Definition

Glossary of "Life (9th ed.)" by Sadava et al. (2011)

  • A substance that decreases the surface tension of a liquid. Lung surfactant, secreted by cells of the alveoli, is mostly phospholipid and decreases the amount of work necessary to inflate the lungs.
