- アジアからヨーロッパ,アフリカ北部,北アメリカに分布し,日本では近畿以西と四国に分布する.地中海気候に多い.
- 日本国内の分布についてはSaito (1973)やInoue et al.(2011)が報告.
- 人家や果実園,畑など窒素分の多い土上に生育.
- 蒴(さく; 胞子体)を良くつける.春に成熟する.
- 蒴歯は退化的で,ほとんどないか,痕跡的.
- 外見は,ツリガネゴケ属Physcomitriumやハリガネゴケ属Bryumに類似.蒴(さく)がないと間違いやすい.
- 本種の学名についてはRos et al. (2008)に細述.
